Why is Environmental Studies Included in the UG Curriculum? Environmental studies have become an integral part of undergraduate (UG) curricula in most colleges and universities due to the increasing environmental challenges facing the world today. According to the Global Climate Risk Index 2021, India ranks 7th globally in terms of climate risk, facing frequent challenges that include climate change, pollution, global warming, biodiversity loss, and deforestation. All these issues require urgent attention to achieve long-term solutions. India has the highest percentage of youth population; thus, educating this young group is critical for a sustainable future. This blog will discuss the primary reasons why students need to study environmental studies in their undergraduate programs and outline the most important subjects covered in the syllabus. It will also highlight the benefits of such studies for UG students. What Is Environmental Studies? Environmental studies are an interdisciplinary field that examines the complex interactions between humans and their environment. They encompass knowledge from various disciplines, including the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. The primary objective of these programs is to understand, address, and analyze environmental issues while fostering sustainability. Therein lies the importance of environmental studies. Interdisciplinary Approach: Environmental studies draw from fields such as the following to offer students a complete understanding of environmental issues: Ecology Biology Chemistry Economics Sociology Political Science Ethics Focus on Interactions between Humans and Environment: The subject examines the impact of human activities on the environment and how environmental changes affect human societies. Orientation towards Solving Problems: The discipline aims to identify and analyze environmental challenges and develop solutions to address them. It also looks to foster a sense of responsible environmental management among the students and promote sustainability. Broader Scope Compared to Environmental Science: Environmental science focuses mainly on the scientific aspects related to the environment. However, environmental studies also integrate social, ethical, cultural, and policy-related dimensions into academic discourse. Why Is It Part of the Undergraduate Curriculum? Colleges and universities in India include environmental studies in the undergraduate curriculum for various important reasons. They want to educate students about the environment, the challenges it is facing, and its overall criticality. These studies aim to promote sustainable practices and foster a sense of responsibility regarding the environment among the students. The inclusion of environmental studies in the syllabus is one of the similarities between a B.A and B.Com program. The aim of such inclusion is to create citizens who are environmentally aware, capable of contributing to a sustainable future, and equipped to deal with various environmental issues. Raising Awareness: Environmental studies courses help students understand the complex relationship between the environment and humans. This includes the impact that human activities have on the planet. Incidents such as natural disasters, rising global temperatures, water shortages, and species extinctions are happening more frequently now. As such, students must understand the consequences and causes of these issues. Environmental studies can educate students about the intricate balance of ecosystems and the results of excessive resource exploitation. Here, they also learn about the socio-economic effects of ecological degradation and the importance of sustainable development. Promoting Sustainability: In these programs, students learn about areas like resource management, biodiversity, and pollution. This is how they develop an understanding of sustainable practices. They also learn how they can apply these practices in their future careers and lives. For example, while promoting products, companies can plan around green advertising to make a meaningful impact. Encouraging Responsible Citizenship: Environmental education creates a sense of responsibility towards the environment. It also encourages students to take part in efforts to conserve and protect the environment. These are the core aspects of these programs. Integrating Interdisciplinary Knowledge: Environmental studies draw on various disciplines, including science, humanities, and social sciences. They act as a bridge between these disciplines. This provides all the stakeholders with a complete understanding of environmental issues. Relevance to Contemporary Careers: The inclusion of environmental studies in UG curricula also shows how important green careers have become. Industries these days are focusing more on sustainability. Similarly, governments are also introducing stricter environmental rules and regulations. All these factors have added to the demand for environmentally knowledgeable professionals. Environmental studies are directly relevant in various careers, such as the following: Environmental Consultancy Corporate Sustainability Management Regional and Urban Planning Climate Change Research Forest and Wildlife Management Environmental Education and Journalism National and Global Policy Mandates: Official mandates back the inclusion of these studies in UG programs in India. In 2003, the Supreme Court of India issued a directive whereby the University Grants Commission (UGC) made it compulsory for environmental studies courses to be included in all universities’ curricula. The move aimed to promote environmental education as a tool for national awareness and development. This also aligns with global trends like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). Civic Engagement: This particular benefit of including environmental studies in UG programs is not as evident as the rest. However, it is just as valuable as they are. This subject teaches students about environmental policies and laws. It also imparts lessons on the responsibilities and rights that students have in this regard. When students possess such knowledge, there is a greater likelihood that they will engage in environmental activism. They will also hold various institutions accountable for the ecological damage they have caused and take part in public discourse to a greater extent. Following are some examples of civic engagement that environmental education can inspire: Participating in Clean-Up Campaigns and Tree Plantation Drives Helping Community Initiatives and Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Supporting Sustainable Practices and Renewable Energy Employing Community Outreach and Social Media to Generate Awareness Addressing Environmental Justice: Underprivileged and marginalized communities are affected disproportionately by environmental degradation. People in rural and poor areas feel issues such as air pollution, loss of natural resources, and contaminated water more acutely. Environmental studies bring more attention to such inequalities and introduce the concept of environmental justice to students. In these programs, students understand how economic and social inequalities intersect with environmental challenges. This way, they develop a greater appreciation for the requirement for equitable and inclusive solutions. Lifestyle Impact and Behavioral Change: The impact of environmental studies is not limited to academic knowledge. It also influences the choices that students make in their day-to-day lives and the way they behave regarding the environment. Studies have shown that environmental education can contribute to welcome behavioral alterations. This includes reducing water and energy consumption, practicing recycling and waste segregation, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting environmentally friendly practices and products. When students start to incorporate sustainable habits into their lives, it also affects their families, workplaces, and communities. Environmental Studies Syllabus: What Do Students Learn? For many students who ask why environmental education is important, the answer lies in the subjects that the discipline covers. Environmental studies focus on studying the intricate relationship between the environment and humans. The focus here is on understanding environmental issues and addressing them. In these programs, students learn about the natural environment, the ways to develop sustainable practices, and human impact. This includes topics such as ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, environmental policy, and natural resources. Ecology and Ecosystems: The structure and function of ecosystems, such as interactions between living organisms and the environment Natural Resources: The various kinds of natural resources and their importance, and sustainable management practices Pollution: Various types of pollution, including air, land, and water pollution, along with their effects, causes, and control measures Biodiversity: The criticality of biodiversity, threats that face it, and conservation strategies Environmental Issues: Assessing local and global environmental issues such as climate change, resource depletion, and deforestation Environmental Management and Policies: Environmental rules and regulations and management plans to deal with different environmental issues Sustainable Development: The notion of sustainable development and how to include it in various parts of life Human Impact: Effects of human activities on nature, and seeking options to reduce the impact Interdisciplinary Approach: Know-how from other disciplines like science, human sciences, and social sciences Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Assessing environmental issues, judging information, and coming up with solutions Environmental Values and Ethics: Ethical duties that human beings have towards the environment – fostering a feeling of responsibility Practical Skills: Monitoring the environment, communication, and collecting data Fieldwork: Gaining experience from field visits to natural areas, environmental projects, and polluted sites How Environmental Studies Benefits Undergraduate Students Environmental education in higher education offers students different benefits, such as fostering awareness, practical skills, and critical thinking. This, in turn, helps them be better placed to deal with the pressing environmental issues. The discipline provides students with the tools and knowledge to understand the effect of human activities on nature. It also fosters sustainable practices and gets them ready for successful careers in related domains. Improved Environmental Literacy and Awareness: These programs help students understand the different issues that plague the environment and promote sustainable practices. It also teaches them to appreciate interconnectedness. Environmental studies offer a detailed understanding of different environmental issues such as pollution, resource depletion, climate change, and biodiversity loss. These courses also emphasize how interconnected natural systems are and the effect that human activities have on such systems. This in turn helps them develop a feeling of responsibility to the environment. Development of Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking Skills: In environmental studies courses, students learn how to analyze complex environmental issues, evaluate information, and develop the necessary solutions. Environmental studies encourage students to assess complex environmental challenges from different points of view by considering scientific, economic, social, and ethical factors. In these programs, students develop the capability to critically judge information from different sources, identify biases, and develop well-informed opinions. We’re actually seeing a change in the way things are happening, for example: Relevance over Experience: A lot of mid-career professionals are questioning their relevance, while young graduates worry if the educational knowledge they acquire aligns with the current work demands. The AI Revolution: Another question I often hear is, “In the next 5 years, 50% of today’s jobs will change or disappear. What skills will keep YOU ahead?” While AI can help us do our homework, it can also work instead of us! The Powerful Partnership: I’m an optimist and firmly believe that AI will not replace us. As Ginni Rometty of IBM famously put it, “AI will not replace humans, but humans that do not use AI will be replaced.” It’s about leveraging AI as a co-pilot as well as an assistant: a true Jugalbandi. Find more on How Online Manipal and Coursera Are Shaping the Future of Career-Ready Education Continuous Learning The shelf life of skills is reducing dramatically. When I first started working, software like SPSS or SAS were important for about 4 – 5 years. Now, things change much more quickly. It seems like we’ve gone from GenAI to agentic AI in the blink of an eye. Here’s why continuous learning is a necessity: Accelerated Pace of Change: New technologies come out so quickly that we have to keep adapting to keep up. The Rise of Meritocracy: With hybrid and remote work, your talents are what matter. More and more, companies value meritocracy, and new hires often outrank older employees who haven’t learned new skills and choose to stay redundant. Skills Over Degrees: Businesses are now looking for skillsets, not just degrees. Having hot skills give you an edge over others than just having a prestigious degree. Right after my MBA, I landed my dream job as a marketing manager with Tata Motors about 22 years ago. But just two years later, I wanted to try something new and something different, so I joined a small startup in Bangalore called Marketics. This was in the very early days of startups, around 2004 – 2005. Marketics focused on data-driven decision-making and data science models for leading CPG companies around the globe. While my marketing domain knowledge was valued, I had to rapidly upskill myself in SPSS and SAS and get good at statistics and model building to outshine. This decision, although hard at the time, provided me a head start in data and analytics and made me relevant. My career has grown since then, which shows that I have embraced upskilling and stepped out of my comfort zone. In-Demand Skills Today While skills evolve, some core areas remain the same. Future Needs Analysis: Look beyond today’s requirements to where your business is heading, just as I pivoted towards data-driven marketing early in my career. Skill Gap Analysis: Compare your current skills with market demands. For instance, in data analysis, knowing modern, faster tools is more important than traditional coding. Prioritization: Make a list of your short-, medium-, and long-term goals. The SMART Template This template is invaluable for setting effective learning strategies and goals: Leveraging AI Tools for Upskilling When my dad made me go to the library, I used Google to do my research. Today, we need to use AI to learn. AI tools are like the internet in its early days; they have a lot of potential. Identify and choose the right AI tools for maximum efficiency. Code Editing & Generation: Tools like Cursor allow you to generate and refactor code, test it, and also document it simply by talking to it in English. Repli.it is yet another powerful AI assistant that can help you code, debug, and make web apps from prompts. Research & Writing: Notion AI is great for keeping track of your goals, planning your path, and journaling. Grammarly and QuillBot are great for grammar-check and providing assistance in writing. Q&A and Assignments: Perplexity AI or ChatGPT can help with assignments and research but always apply your critical thinking. The goal is to master the tool, not becoming its slave. Creative & Business: Canva with Magic Design, Adobe Firefly, Descript, Tableau GPT, and Power BI can significantly speed up creative tasks, visualizations, and dashboards. Earlier, I used to take weeks to create visualizations and dashboards for reporting. With the help of these tools today, I just take minutes. Embrace AI; don’t fight it. Use it to upskill yourself! Dr. Varun Rajan – A Maestro of Medicine, Mridangam, Movies, and More! We see doctors who are mostly busy rushing through the corridors, immersed in patient care. But ever wondered what their lives look like outside of the hospital walls? Get ready to be inspired by one such doctor who is a reputed urologist, school district topper, and inspiration to many of his students. Dr. Varun Rajan is a MAHE student pursuing Online MBA in Healthcare Management. His story isn’t just about managing a busy schedule effortlessly but also about making life purposeful with a dash of musical magic, for as he quotes, All work and no play makes Varun a dull boy! Dr. Varun Delivering a Talk From Hospital Walls to Harmonies: Dr. Varun’s Hidden Talents When he’s not busy saving lives in the operating theatre, Dr. Varun indulges in music. He has been a professional Mridangam player for 32 years, performing on numerous stages and in various competitions. But it doesn’t stop there. In a lovely turn of events, Dr. Varun found his singing voice thanks to his wife, Dr. M. Sowmya, who is also an Assistant Professor of Physiology and a trained Carnatic vocalist. “She heard me humming one day and encouraged me, ‘Why don’t you try singing?’ and here I am!” he shares. They even perform together sometimes, where his mridangam beats complement her ragas. Dr. Varun Playing Mridangam with His Wife And when asked what his Mridangam would say if it could talk, Varun jokes that it would complain about the tiresome efforts he makes to get it perfectly in tune just before a performance and about the wrong notes he might have played while practicing. Besides music, Varun loves reading good books, travelling with his family, mentoring his students, writing short stories, and watching movies and cricket in his free time. A Case that Remained: Dr. Varun’s Toughest Moment For Dr. Varun, being a doctor came with its own set of setbacks and emotional challenges. When asked about the hardest case he has had to diagnose, Dr. Varun recalls a case from his post-graduation in General Surgery where his colleagues and him operated on a 16-year-old boy, expecting it to be a routine case. However, the report brought them shocking news: a rare and advanced cancerous growth. “It was a huge shock because he was very young and the only son of a single mother,” Varun shares. Despite their best efforts, the boy passed away in four months because the cancer had progressed to an advanced stage. The case is even published in a national journal due to its rarity, but for Dr. Varun, the profound emotional impact of losing that young boy remains. Dr. Varun in the Operation Theatre Who Keeps Him Going: Inspiration and Support Dr. Varun draws inspiration from his parents and his mentor, Prof. Ganesh Gopalakrishnan, a renowned urologist in Coimbatore. From his mother, he learned valuable lessons like perfection, time management, punctuality, and 100% sincerity. Another setback for him was losing his mother in 2011. Then there’s his wife, Dr. M. Sowmya, whom he proudly calls his ‘No. 1 fan!’. And his cute daughter, Laya. Laya, it seems, has already inherited her parents’ musical genes, having started singing after seeing them constantly sing around the house. “That’s something for passive learning!” he marvels. At a tender age of four and a half, his daughter’s understanding nature is also a huge help; when he has his MBA webinars, she’ll sweetly say, “Okay Papa, I’ll bug Mom instead”. Dr. Varun with His Family Improving Patient Care: Online MBA in Healthcare Management With such a busy life, what made Dr. Varun decide to pursue an MBA? The reason stemmed from a powerful realization he had when visiting a small nursing home that had limited resources, a shortage of hospital beds, and a lot of disorganization among the staff. He noticed that the hospital director didn’t have an MBA, which made him realize that an MBA in Healthcare could equip someone to manage things better and truly elevate patient care. He searched for MBA programs online, Online Manipal popped on his screen, and as he puts it, “The rest, as they say, is history!”. Dr. Varun with MAHE Faculty at PANORAMA 2025 For his post-graduation, Dr. Varun got selected in MAHE, but due to various circumstances, he had to return to Coimbatore. His family is also full of MBA graduates. The desire to be a graduate from an Institution of Eminence and to continue his family’s legacy, MAHE’s Online MBA helped him hit two strikes with one swing. As a medical doctor, Dr. Varun initially found it challenging to understand the concepts in MBA, but he thanks his MAHE Online professors, Prof. Ujwal, Dr. Everil Fernandes, Dr. Tarushree, Prof. Shreevatsa Gudi, Prof. Raghavendra Nayak, Dr. Aruna, and Dr. Sampath for guiding him and helping him achieve academic excellence. Super-skill: Time Management, Passion, and Creativity With stressful lives, everyone needs an anchor to ground to, and such an anchor for Dr. Varun is his secret weapon: excellent time management, a super-skill he inherited from his mother. He makes sure to allocate time to do justice to all his commitments each day. And in case he misses, he tries to compensate for the lost hours the next day. And to relax? “There’s music playing in my ears all day!”, he says. Dr. Varun Performing at PANORAMA 2025 Dr. Varun’s story truly shows the power of passion, strength, efficiency, and smart time management. What is the Employee Selection Process? Key Steps and its Importance Explained What is The Selection Process? The selection process in organizations is directed towards finding the right talent for vacancies within the organization. Typically, it is akin to filtering through a series of funnels to find the solution via elimination. More than 84% of the organizations in India have reported ill effects of wrong hiring! A core function of Human Resource Management, the selection process, is crucial to creating a holistic work environment. Did you know that just one bad hire could cost your company up to 29 Lakhs? The recruitment and selection process varies by industry, organization, and department. Positions differ on the grounds of responsibility and criteria. In this article, we’ve explained the key steps in the selection process. Check this out: How to become an HR manager: Job role and salary What are the Key Steps in Selection Process? Let’s look at the step-by-step guide to the employee selection process. 1. Preliminary Interview Once a requirement is posted, a company may receive hundreds of thousands of applications. In a granular pre-process, the preliminary interview is conducted to weed out all candidates who do not meet the essential eligibility criteria – educational qualifications, required skill sets, proven certifications, and experience. Candidates may also be assessed based on their background and level of interest. Some companies employ innovative techniques to bring the right candidates to the table right from the get-go. For example, Uber deployed “Code on the road,” an in-app coding game that took candidates straight to the next stage of the selection process if they passed the challenge! Gamifying recruitment selection is among the latest trends in HRM. 2. Receiving Applications Once candidates pass the preliminary interview, organizations must aim to standardize the application process. Here, candidates must fill out a standard application form that collects bio-data, qualification, experience, background, and educational information. The application could gather a broader understanding of the candidate, such as hobbies and interests. A comprehensive application form will come in handy during the final selection process when decisions are to be made between similar candidates. 3. Screening Applications This stage includes shortlisting potential candidates from the pool of applicants who applied. The screening committee constitutes various team leads, department members, inter-department associates, and coordinators who would be working closely with the selected candidates. Screening can include multiple criteria, including educational prowess, relevancy in terms of experience, etc. The interview details and requirements are shared with potential candidates via a call or email. 4. Preliminary Tests Preliminary tests are an essential part of the job selection process. They assess the aptitude, IQ, emotional intelligence, proficiency, and personality of candidates. While some organizations hold these tests remotely, many prefer to arrange a test venue generally within organizational premises. Should they be held at the premises, the candidates are informed of the itinerary. 5. Employment Interview The selection interview is the crux of the entire process. It could be defined as an in-person conversation that puts candidates on their feet. This step signals how well he/she fits into the company ethos. During this stage, companies provide a detailed brief of the job profile, including the roles and responsibilities that the candidate is expected to shoulder. Likewise, the candidate is encouraged to share his/her concerns or queries with the employer. The employment interview itself may be divided into several rounds, including group discussions and other activities. In-person interviews allow employers to judge the candidate’s calibre, personality, teamwork, and leadership skills. 6. Checking References Although in-person interviews provide a fair idea about the candidate, contacting references allows employers to verify their understanding. Through discussions with references who vouch for the candidates’ professionalism and work ethics, they may discover other qualities about him/her. For this stage of the recruitment process in HRM, organizations may reach out to previous employers or the concerned educational institutions. 7. Medical Examination Although not strictly followed, medical examinations are slowly becoming commonplace among organizations today. Modern companies are viewing medical fitness (both mental and physical) as a cost function. A healthy employee would require fewer sick leaves and handle stress relatively quickly, allowing greater productivity in dynamic, fast-paced environments. Some employers view this matter seriously and consider this a preliminary phase during the screening stage. 8. Final Selection The last phase of the selection process is to cross the t’s and dot the i’s; candidates who have successfully qualified through all rounds of the recruitment and selection in HRM receive an offer/appointment letter from the organization. More often than not, candidates receive a temporary position with an assurance of permanency on completion of the probation period. The appointment letter typically includes all such details, including salary and company policies. Candidates may also be asked to sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) that ensures the protection of company data.
