Finance, Films, and Favorites: A Candid Conversation with Dr Avnish Vijay

When you meet Dr Avnish Vijay, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator (MBA), you quickly realize that he’s not your regular professor, but so much more. Yes, he knows a lot about finance and strategic management, but outside of classes, he believes in living by his principles, keeping curious, and sometimes stealing the show with his singing and anchoring talents.

Curious to know the inspiration behind his mastery, advice he swears by, and his interests? Let’s find out!

Who are you most inspired by and why?

My greatest inspiration, without a doubt, is my father. He was a schoolteacher, and for me, the original super-hero. He had an interesting philosophy: “Live by your principles; stand tall with dignity.” What stuck with me most was his belief in standing firm when you’re right but also admitting when you’ve made a mistake.

He treated every student equally. Whether they had access to resources or not, that kind of honesty and dedication shaped how I approach my own students even today.

What is the best thing about being a teacher?

For me, teaching finance and strategy is not just about numbers or models but about watching students grow in confidence. The best moments are when a student who was shy in the beginning, suddenly starts presenting ideas boldly, or when they connect a classroom concept to something real in their lives. Those transformations make all the long hours worth it.

Are there any resources at MUJ that you would recommend which would help students become successful?

Absolutely. Our online library is a hidden gem. It is packed with research papers, industry case studies, and books; everything a learner needs to stay ahead! Certificate programmes are another big plus. They help broaden your skill set beyond the regular syllabus.

Here are some campus immersion programs from MUJ you can explore: Bloomberg at MUJ, Integrated Tech Workshop

A Different Side of Dr Avnish

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I have two things that come to mind. First, I enjoy keeping up with new tech trends. Keeping myself updated on the latest happenings in the technological world keeps me both sharp and curious.

Secondly, I love movies! Give me a good thriller or even a silly comedy, and I’m set. Movies are my escape. They make me laugh, think, and sometimes even cry!

Which film would you say is a must watch? Why?

Dil Chahta Hai‘ is an absolute must-watch. Directed by Farhan Akhtar, it is an entire package! It showcases heartwarming friendship, growing up, learning who you are, and cherishing the bonds that hold you together. Also, the electrifying music. I do not think any other movie captures a mix of youth, love, and nostalgia so beautifully.

What is the one piece of advice you would give your students?

Be a learner, always. The world keeps changing, and staying curious is the best way to stay prepared. At the same time, take moments to relax; breaks are as important as working hard. Stay curious, be receptive to new ideas, and let the pursuit of learning be a guiding light on your path to success.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise your students.

I’m not your typical, run-of-the-mill professor. I am more than a ‘finance guy’, in fact, I love singing and anchoring. Whether it’s hosting events or performing, I enjoy bringing energy and entertainment to the audience. It’s a side of me that’s very different from teaching, but it’s equally rewarding because it connects me with people in a whole new way.

If you were not a teacher, you would be..

In an alternate universe, I think I imagine myself being a part of the exciting world of technology development. I’ve always been fascinated by tech, whether it’s about creating something new or solving unsolved problems in innovative ways. The thought of building something new and being part of the next big wave of innovation excites me.

How do you think students will remember you and your classes?

I hope students will remember my classes as a transformative journey, not just through the subject I teach but also in a way where I have encouraged their personal growth. I want them to walk away saying, “Avnish sir’s classes made me sharper, more confident, and wiser!”

What is the one daily habit you would recommend to your students?

Prioritise moments of relaxation and downtime. Small breaks can do a lot.

A Fun Dr Avnish
A Fun Side of Dr Avnish

Of course, no faculty feature is complete without some fun facts. Dr. Vijay’s must-have apps are Amazon and Netflix, his go-to daily ritual is tea with a light-hearted drama, and he can sing “Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas” start to finish without missing a beat.

Closing Thoughts

At Manipal University Jaipur, faculty like Dr Avnish Vijay embody a perfect blend of academic expertise, mentorship, and culture. His journey shows us that teaching is not just about sharing knowledge but also about shaping mindsets and inspiring lifelong learning. Students under his guidance don’t just walk away with lessons in finance and strategy, they leave with lessons of confidence, curiosity, and deeply instilled values.

Excellence Recognized: Manipal Universities Secure Top NIRF Ranks

Students when deciding on a university are not only choosing the classrooms and degrees available to them but the credibility, quality, and recognition as well. One of the strongest indicators of that recognition in India is the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) which is a yearly rating by the Ministry of Education and has become the gold standard for comparing higher education institutions.

The universities under the Manipal education ecosystem – Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal University Jaipur (MUJ), and Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) – have once again been ranked among the top in the country in the 2025 NIRF rankings.

This year, the NIRF rankings saw a record number of over 14k+ institutions signing up, which made the competition more intense than before. However, the institutions of Manipal not only kept their ground but also went up in several important categories thereby demonstrating that excellence is not an act but a habit.

MAHE: Leading from the Front

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) is now secured among the top institutions globally. The year 2025 saw the institution consolidating its role even further:

  • University Rank: 3 (Got better from 4 in 2024)
  • Overall Rank: 14 (no change from 2024)

MAHE’s rise in the University category to the Top 3 in India signals that the university is spreading its roots across the globe, conducting frontier research, and being able to draw in the best minds from over 60 countries. Having been declared an Institution of Eminence, MAHE is not only raising the bar in India but also globally, with its offshoots in Dubai, Malaysia, Nepal, and Antigua.

This means the students get the chance to be part of a brand that is known for quality, diversity, and innovation, whether they are located on-campus or online..

MUJ: Breaking into the Top 100

Manipal University Jaipur (MUJ) is the embodiment of a successful story that went up through the ranks in a very short time. In less than 14 years, MUJ has already established itself as one of the most versatile universities in the northern part of India. The 2025 NIRF Rankings are the proof of this gradual ascent:

  • Overall Rank: 98 (Previously, the 101–150 band in 2024)
  • University Rank: 58 (Previously, 64 in 2024)
  • Management Rank: 81 (The position went down slightly from 73 in 2024, showing the competitiveness of the field)

Getting into the Top 100 universities overall is an achievement that is not easy by any means—it puts MUJ alongside the best universities in the whole country. Such a jump says a lot about its high-quality infrastructure, robust industry collaborations, and zonal focus.

The students who decide on MUJ are not just enrolling in a university; on the contrary, they become a part of an institution that is rapidly turning into a nationally recognized center for research, innovation, and leadership.

SMU: Strengthening Access in the Northeast

Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) has been known for its distinct legacy as one of the first public-private partnerships in higher education in India. Since its establishment in 1992, SMU has been central in spreading higher education to the entire Northeast region which has been less accessed historically.

In the 2025 NIRF Rankings, SMU kept its rank in the 151–200 band (University category). Though the figures of the institution stay the same, its outreach is extensive. The university has been instrumental in providing thousands of students from the Northeast and other places with access to quality medical, engineering, management, and various other courses.

For many, SMU is not just a university, rather, it is a gateway to the future, demonstrating that rankings are merely one aspect of a much bigger narrative of service and accessibility.

Why These Rankings Matter

India has more than 1000+ universities but only a few of them are consistently found at the top of the NIRF rankings. Manipal institutions getting excellent rankings from year to year demonstrate:

  • Trust: The academic quality of the institutions can be trusted by students and parents.
  • Recognition: The rankings are taken into account by employers, research partners, and universities all over the world.
  • Consistency: In spite of more competition, Manipal universities are either maintaining their positions or going up.

Individually, MAHE, MUJ, and SMU represent a blend of tradition, creativity, and openness; three values that students can rely on.

The Manipal Edge for Online Learners

The degree programs of Online Manipal are also powered by the same factors that place the institution in the top NIRF rankings. Online learners enrolling benefit from:

  • Degrees from universities ranked among the best in India.
  • Curricula that have been designed to meet the standards of the industry and the world.
  • The credibility of a brand that has been trusted for over six decades.

While students who have to juggle between their career, personal goals, or live in a remote place, Online Manipal is still there to offer them a world-class education with the same recognition and rigor as on-campus learners.

Dr. Ramdas M. Pai at 90: A Legacy of Vision, Values and Global Impact

“Strong belief in what you undertake, and the courage to walk alone, is what defines leadership.”

– Dr. Ramdas Pai

Dr. Ramdas Madhav Pai, Chairman Emeritus of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), a Padma Bhushan awardee and visionary leader, celebrates his 90th birthday this year. Dr. Pai not only fulfilled his father’s dream but also empowered lives, created institutions, and took Manipal to different parts of the world. His journey can be counted as a story of determination, bravery, and limitless ambition. Let us reflect on the achievements, the guiding values, and the impact of a life dedicated to education, healthcare, and service.

From Early Days to Global Leader

Dr. Ramdas Madhav Pai is the son of Dr. T. M. A. Pai, the man who laid the base for one of the first private higher education ventures in India. From the early days, his father was a believer in the power of education to change lives, even when private medical colleges were seen with distrust. Through hard work, Dr. TMA Pai managed to acquire the land for the college, built the required infrastructure, and implemented innovative curricula and learning approaches. Dr. Ramdas Pai took over this dream and gradually converted it into reality.

Dr. Ramdas Pai is an alumnus of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and holds a postgraduate course in Hospital Administration at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. His professional life began in 1961, when he took the position of hospital administrator at Manipal’s Kasturba Hospital. The combination of these early choices and experiences, which were clinical in nature and strategic in management, would pave the way for his successful leadership of large educational and healthcare institutions.

Key Achievements & Honors

Over the course of his career, Dr. Pai has garnered many prestigious awards including:

  • Padma Bhushan, Government of India (2011)
  • Datuk Award, Government of Melaka, Malaysia (2011)
  • Golden Peacock Lifetime Achievement Award (2011) for contributions in education and healthcare

Other awards

  • Award of Philanthropy by Bunts’ Sangha, Bombay, 1992
  • ‘Konkani Prathibha’ Award, 1994, Konkani Bhasha Prachar Sabha, Cochin
  • Award by World Konkani Convention, 1995
  • Government of Karnataka Honour, 2006
  • Suvarna Karnataka Year
  • Chanakya Award (National awards for achievers), 2008
  • Public Relations Council of India

Expanding Scope and Global Reach

Under his leadership, MAHE became more global and has students from almost 60 countries studying at Manipal’s campuses. MAHE crossed Indian borders to establish campuses in Dubai, Malaysia, Nepal, and Antigua. His goal is that in twenty years Manipal will be recognized not only as a top ranked Indian university but also as one of the biggest global universities.

In India, Dr. Pai expanded the Manipal heritage by establishing Sikkim Manipal University (1992) and Manipal University Jaipur (2011), bringing quality education to new regions across the country.

A landmark achievement under Dr. Pai’s leadership was when the University Grants Commission (UGC) conferred MAHE with the status of a Deemed University in 1993.

Vision, Philosophy & Institutional Growth

Visionary Leadership

Dr. Pai sees “a world of shrinking distances and countries with open borders”- a time ahead when Manipal will not be limited by geography but will still be able to spread its wings through global collaboration and innovation. He anticipated the international student community to grow not only in size but also in a variety of backgrounds and ideas.

Strong Beliefs & Work Ethic

One of his cardinal rules is strong belief in what one undertakes, paired with full commitment, even when one walks alone. He acknowledges fear and adversity as part of the journey but emphasizes that success comes to those who overcome such hurdles. This philosophy, inherited and adapted, shapes both his personal journey and that of the institutions he leads.

Contributions in Education, Healthcare & Community

Diverse Academic Offering

MAHE started out as a single medical college, Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, and has now grown to offer courses in various fields of study like dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, engineering, humanities, management, public health, design, and so on. This development is an illustration of Dr. Pai’s conviction that education should be multidisciplinary, thus preparing students for global challenges.

Infrastructure & Curriculum Innovation

The growth of Manipal institutes extends not only to physical infrastructure but also to learning methods. Dr. Pai has been instrumental in the promotion of state-of-the-art facilities, the creation of curricula and the adoption of teaching methods, all of which are in line with the technological changes and the expectations of a globalized generation.

Ethics, Values & Service

The leadership of Dr. Pai is characterized by being ethically and morally sound at its core: honesty, integrity, equality, and justice are his watchwords. The faculty, staff, and students form the larger family unit to which he refers. He believes institutions should give back to society through free education for the poor, healthcare for all, jobs for locals, and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Leadership Philosophy

Dr. Pai’s leadership is a combination of strength and compassion. He is logical and well-ordered, but at the same time, he is friendly and understanding to the needs of others. His guiding principle can be represented by the Sanskrit maxim:

“Vajradapi Kathorani Mruduni Kusumadapi” – Tough beyond a diamond, yet gentler than a flower’s petal.

This philosophy shaped an environment where trust replaced micromanagement, collaboration outweighed competition, and individuals were empowered to grow.

Leadership Style & Legacy

  • Blending Strength with Compassion : Dr. Pai’s style is both firm and kind. He believes that leadership requires both decisiveness and humility; that authority and flexibility should coexist. He insists that institutions be ethical in conduct, even when making tough decisions.
  • Listening, Empathy & Trust: Dr. Pai created spaces where listening mattered as much as leading. He fostered trust by avoiding micromanagement; responsibility was shared. His approach enabled people within his institutions to act, make decisions, and grow—both individually and collectively.
  • A Legacy Beyond Labels: Stories are many: the firm handshake that becomes a symbol of trust, colleagues who feel like members of a common mission, teams that grow bold and independent, and a reputation that’s earned, not assumed. Such a legacy is powerful because it shapes not only the organization but also the culture.

Reflections at 90: Why This Matters Now

The celebration of his 90th birthday is an opportunity to look back on what has been accomplished and what still lies ahead. In this complex educational environment, Dr. Pai’s odyssey enlightens us with his experiences:

  1. Vision matters: Even with a lot of resources, institutions without a guiding and ambitious vision may find themselves in a deadlock. Dr. Pai’s vision has been the driving force behind Manipal’s efforts to go beyond the local and become globally relevant.
  1. Values are the foundation: Excellence made without the support of ethics is like a house of cards. The duration of life and the honor that MAHE receives are all due to the three pillars of the institution: integrity, service, and compassion.
  1. Leadership is relational: Dr. Pai’s leadership shows that trust, empathy, listening, and shared responsibility are not soft‐traits—they are critical for institutional resilience and for cultivating future leaders.
  1. Commitment to Community: For poor students, scholarships, healthcare access for different communities, and job opportunities within the community show that he believes that organizations should be of service to the community, not only to students.

The Journey Ahead

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), recognized as an Institution of Eminence and ranked 3rd by NIRF among the top universities in India, has seen growth in the infrastructure, research, global partnerships, and student diversity, with the university acting as a leader. The mission of Dr. Pai is still on, his dream of a globally recognized university is achieved, but it is still evolving, driven by new challenges, new generations, and new opportunities.

Let this 90th milestone be more than a celebration; let it be a moment of renewed resolve for all those linked with Manipal: students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners. To carry forward a legacy built over decades, uphold the values that shaped it, and design the future yet to unfold.

In Gratitude & Hope

The life of Dr. Ramdas M. Pai was never just about the recognitions and the institutions he built – it was a testament to how education can elevate a person, how leadership can be persistent, and how a single person’s faith can spread like a wave over thousands, even millions of people.

His pulse at 90 remains unchanged: a commitment to enriching lives, to challenging limits while being grounded, to dreaming revolutionary dreams and making them happen.
