Online learning from universities vs. individual learning from free resources

Gone are the days when students and working professionals depended only on university education through online classes. Today, individuals can learn independently by accessing online degrees from institutions or free online resources independently. However, as digitization progresses rapidly, the world is undergoing a debate surrounding the two education paths.

Learning from universities, especially online programs, offers numerous advantages beyond the traditional classroom experience. Online education from reputable institutions provides flexibility, allowing students to balance their studies with personal and professional responsibilities. These programs often feature the same rigorous curriculum and esteemed faculty as their on-campus counterparts, ensuring a high-quality education. Additionally, online learning fosters a diverse, global classroom environment, where students can network and collaborate with peers from various cultural and professional backgrounds. The integration of advanced e-learning platforms enhances accessibility and engagement, providing students with a wealth of resources and interactive learning tools. Ultimately, online university programs empower individuals to advance their knowledge and careers while accommodating their unique circumstances and schedules.

Online university courses have a formal learning structure because the respective national bodies curate and accredit them. The programs are delivered through virtual classrooms by experienced faculty members or instructors. Students in the university courses follow a comprehensive curriculum, assessment, and opportunities for getting certificates. Conversely, free resources and certifications on the Internet help students learn valuable information inexpensively.

However, when choosing one of the courses, students compare their credibility and learning experiences. The decision between the two courses depends on the learner’s objectives, time management, and finances. Let’s delve into the details of online vs individual learning comparison.

The Benefits of online learning from universities

Here are the benefits of formal education vs self-learning:

University online learning courses have a formal structure for different student levels.

  • Students can access the courses and obtain the degree program in any discipline they choose to pursue their careers.
  • Online courses offer credibility and recognition of the degree, meeting industry standards.
  • Accessibility to expert faculties helps students gain knowledge and interact with renowned professors.
  • Online learning facilitates relationships between students and teachers during virtual office hours, email communication, or discussion boards.
  • Students can engage and collaborate easily with their classmates through online forums and group projects, fostering a sense of community.

Students getting university degrees tend to get more jobs with higher salaries than individuals with high school diplomas. In India, 45% of graduates are employed in technical jobs, and 53% are in non-technical jobs. These people get job stability and career advancement with the online learning degree.

The benefits of individual learning from free resources

Free resources help students access course materials from websites, online platforms, and educational institutions.

  • There are endless options, from coding and digital marketing to photography and foreign languages.
  • These resources are more cost-effective than traditional educational degrees.
  • Eliminating financial barriers helps students explore different fields of interest and enhance their professional development.
  • It encourages working professionals to experiment with subjects without fearing wasting or losing money.
  • Self-guided resources enable individuals to tailor their learning pace to their needs and preferences.

Limitations of Individual Learning from Free Resources

Those looking to expand their knowledge and skills can access many resources, whether online courses, tutorials, or forums. However, it’s essential to recognize the limitations of individual learning from these free resources to make the right decision.

  • Free resources are easy to learn and provide valuable information, but often, their curriculum is inappropriate or not up-to-date. Learners find it difficult to study the topics in proper order due to the lack of structure. It can lead to a fragmented understanding of the subject and hinder progress.
  • It can be difficult to distinguish reliable sources from unreliable ones. Misinformation can lead to misconceptions, incorrect knowledge, and financial losses, harming the learning process. Learners must evaluate the credibility of their resources and seek out reputable sources.
  • Students lose focus and procrastinate without a formal learning environment or deadlines. Moreover, the absence of feedback or evaluation can make it challenging to measure progress and identify areas for improvement. Without external accountability, learners must find ways to stay motivated and set goals for themselves.

However, there are ways to overcome these challenges and maximize individual learning from free resources.

  • Outline a clear learning path and set specific goals for yourself. Break the subject matter into manageable portions and allocate time for each topic.
  • Take the time to research and find reliable resources. Look for courses or tutorials created by experts in the field or trusted educational institutions. Utilize online reviews or recommendations from trusted sources to ensure the quality of your resources.
  • Find ways to assess your progress and receive feedback on your work. It could involve seeking mentors or experts in the field who can provide guidance and evaluation. Moreover, consider participating in online challenges or competitions that provide opportunities for feedback and recognition.

While individual learning from free resources has limitations, it can still be valuable for personal and professional growth. Take advantage of the wealth of free resources available, but remember to approach them with a critical mindset and a proactive approach to learning.

From a dreamer to a pilot: The tale of Roshan Yadav

Sometimes, the sky isn’t the limit—it’s just the beginning! From a young dreamer gazing at planes to a seasoned pilot soaring through the clouds, this is the journey of Roshan Yadav, who has turned a passion for aviation into a thrilling career. From exploring the highs and lows of life in the cockpit, meticulous pre-flight preparations to the exhilarating freedom of flying every day, Roshan Yadav throws light on how he enjoys flying. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or an aspiring pilot, the story of our learner is sure to inspire you and here’s a glimpse into the exciting world of flying.

Roshan Yadav, who is a pilot by profession, is pursuing his online BCA from Manipal University Jaipur. We caught up in a candid conversation with him to explore the world of flying through his eyes. So, let’s delve in.

“I was fascinated by planes since childhood”

Roshan was always fascinated by airplanes and the idea of flying. Ever since he was a child, he would look up at the sky and watch airplanes soaring overhead, and he knew that he wanted to be a part of that world too. He did his research and discovered how it was like to become a pilot and became even more determined to pursue a career in aviation.

“For me, the best part of being a pilot is the experience of flying. I never get tired of the feeling of soaring through the sky, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to do it as part of my job. Every flight is a new adventure, and I love the sense of freedom,” he said.

“Every day as a pilot is new and challenging”

Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a pilot looks like? Well, here’s what Roshan explained.

“My daily routine as a pilot keeps changing depending on my flight schedule. However, when I am assigned a flight, my routine typically involves a few hours of preparation before departure. This includes reviewing the flight plan, checking for weather conditions, and briefing the crew members. Once we’re in the air, my main focus is operating the flight safely and efficiently, while also ensuring that the passengers are comfortable and well taken care of. After landing, I complete post-flight procedures and return home for some much-needed rest and relaxation.”

“I enjoy shorter flights”

“While I enjoy all aspects of flying, I particularly enjoy short flights. They offer a level of flexibility and convenience that longer flights can’t match. Short flights allow me to rest and recharge between flights, and I find them less exhausting than longer flights,” he added.

“Unexpected challenges have made me a better pilot”

The life of a pilot can be quite challenging, be it the training or the flight itself. It is important for pilots to possess certain qualities and characteristics to ensure a safe flight. Roshan Yadav recollected one such incident in the past that changed his perspective about flying.

“I cannot forget that moment during my training, when an engine of the plane caught fire. It was a scary and chaotic moment, but it also taught me a valuable lesson about staying calm and focused on the face of unexpected challenges. I’m grateful for the experience, as it helped me become a better and more confident pilot,” he said.

“I love flying to Nepal”

Every pilot has a favorite destination to fly to, and for Roshan, it’s the country he belongs to- Nepal. “As a proud Nepalese, my favorite destination to fly to is Nepal,” he said.

Amidst his busy schedule as a pilot, Roshan zest for continuous learning led him to pursue an online BCA degree.

“I’m pursuing this degree as part of my ongoing efforts to advance my career in aviation to become a captain. I believe that the knowledge and skills I’m gaining through this program will help me grow in this field,” he said.

Here’s what Roshan had to say for aspiring pilots.

“My number one piece of advice for someone looking to become a pilot is to be prepared to work hard and stay focused. This profession requires a high level of dedication, attention to detail, and responsibility. My other advice would be to stay calm and composed, even in stressful situations, and to always prioritize safety above all else.”

Revolutionizing admissions: UGC introduces biannual admission in HEI

“Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us, there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.”John F. Kennedy

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently issued a notice introducing biannual admissions in Higher Education Institutes (HEI) across India. This significant policy change aims to provide greater flexibility and opportunities for students seeking higher education. Traditionally, admissions in most Indian universities and colleges have been conducted once a year, limiting students’ ability to join courses that align with their educational or personal timelines. The introduction of biannual admissions marks a transformative shift in the higher education landscape, offering potential benefits for both students and institutions. In 2023 the Commission permitted biannual admissions under open and distance learning (ODL) and online modes in January and July during an academic year.

The new UGC directive is poised to make higher education more accessible and adaptable, catering to the diverse needs of the student population. By allowing admissions twice a year, the UGC aims to reduce the pressure on students who might have missed the annual admission cycle due to various reasons, such as board exam results, personal circumstances, or a need for a gap year. This change not only alleviates the stress associated with a single admission period but also opens up opportunities for continuous enrollment and learning.

Overview of the UGC Notice:

The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced the introduction of biannual admissions for higher education institutes in India in a landmark decision aimed at enhancing the accessibility and flexibility of higher education. This policy was unveiled on 19 June 2024, with the rationale centered around accommodating the diverse needs of students and aligning the admission processes with global educational standards. The UGC emphasized that the decision was driven by the need to reduce the pressure on students and provide them with multiple opportunities to enroll in higher education programs.

Implementation Timeline

The implementation of biannual admissions is set to commence in the academic year 2024-25, with a phased approach to ensure a smooth transition. Initially, select institutions will pilot the new admission system, allowing for adjustments based on feedback and operational challenges. By the subsequent academic year, the policy will be fully rolled out across all UGC-recognized higher education institutions. Transitional arrangements include training for administrative staff, updates to admission software, and comprehensive communication strategies to inform prospective students and their families about the changes.

Understanding Biannual Admissions

Biannual admissions entail offering two admission cycles per academic year, typically one in the beginning (around July-August) and another mid-year (around January-February). This system provides students with the flexibility to choose between two entry points, thereby aligning their education timelines with personal circumstances or other commitments.

Comparison with Traditional Admissions

Traditionally, Indian higher education institutions have followed a single admission cycle, usually commencing in the middle of the year. This system required students to align their preparation and applications with a fixed schedule, often leading to high levels of stress and limited flexibility. In contrast, biannual admissions offer multiple opportunities within the same academic year, thus spreading out the demand and providing more options for students to plan their education journey.

Benefits for Students

Biannual admission in HEI across India will benefit students in the following ways:

Increased Flexibility

Biannual admissions significantly increase the flexibility for students, allowing them to start their higher education journey at a time that best suits their personal and academic readiness. This is particularly beneficial for students who may need to take a gap year or those whose circumstances change unexpectedly.

Reduced Pressure

Having two admission cycles reduces the pressure associated with a single set of entrance exams. Students who may not perform well in the first cycle have another opportunity to apply within the same year, alleviating the high-stakes nature of the traditional single admission period.

Improved Access

The introduction of biannual admissions improves access to higher education by providing more entry points throughout the year. This ensures that students who miss the initial admission window due to unforeseen circumstances still have an opportunity to enroll in their desired programs without waiting an entire year.

Impact on Higher Education Institutes

Below are the impact listed that biannual admissions will have on higher education institues

Enrollment Management

With biannual admissions, institutes will need to develop new strategies for managing student enrollment and resource allocation. This includes balancing the number of students admitted in each cycle and ensuring that resources such as classrooms, housing, and faculty are adequately distributed.

Curriculum Planning

Institutions will need to adjust their curriculum planning and scheduling to accommodate two intakes of students. This may involve revising academic calendars, ensuring that courses are available in both cycles, and maintaining a consistent standard of education across both admission periods.

Faculty and Staff Workload

The introduction of biannual admissions could impact faculty and staff workloads, necessitating changes in teaching schedules and administrative tasks. Institutes will need to carefully manage these aspects to prevent burnout and ensure that the quality of education and support services remains high.

Challenges and Considerations

The challenges and considerations are as follows-

Resource Allocation

One of the primary challenges of implementing biannual admissions is effective resource allocation. This includes managing classroom space, housing facilities, and other institutional resources to accommodate two sets of students within the same academic year.

Maintaining Academic Standards

Ensuring that academic standards and the quality of education are maintained across both admission cycles is crucial. Institutions will need to implement robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to uphold the integrity of their academic programs.

Coordination with Entrance Exams

Coordinating entrance exams and aligning their results with the biannual admission cycles presents another challenge. Institutes and examination bodies will need to work closely to ensure that exam schedules and results are synchronized with the new admission timelines.

International Perspective

Look at the international perspective of biannual admissions-

Global Practices

Biannual admission policies are not new to the global education landscape. Many countries, including the United States and Australia, have successfully implemented multiple admission cycles in their higher education systems. These models provide valuable insights into the benefits and challenges of such a system.

According to Manojranjan Nayak, founder president of SOA, “It will increase the intake and thus assist in increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio and make India a ‘Global Study Destination’ as envisioned in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Times Of India

Learning from Global Models

Indian higher education institutions can learn from international practices by adopting best practices and avoiding potential pitfalls. This includes developing efficient administrative processes, ensuring continuous faculty development, and fostering a student-centric approach to admissions and education.

Student Support and Guidance

Counseling and Advising

With the introduction of biannual admissions, the role of counseling and advising services becomes even more critical. Institutes should enhance their support systems to guide students through the new admission processes and help them make informed decisions.

Communication Strategies

Effective communication strategies are essential to inform and guide students about the new admission cycles. Institutes should use multiple channels, including websites, social media, and informational sessions, to ensure that students and their families are well-informed and prepared for the changes.

Potential Long-term Effects

Higher Education Landscape

In the long term, biannual admissions could significantly transform the higher education landscape in India. This policy has the potential to increase enrollment rates, reduce dropout rates, and make higher education more inclusive and accessible.

Future Policy Developments

The success of biannual admissions may pave the way for future policy developments and reforms in Indian higher education. This could include further flexibility in academic programs, increased emphasis on student-centric education, and more robust support systems for students.

The introduction of biannual admissions by the UGC represents a significant step toward making higher education in India more accessible and flexible. While this policy offers numerous benefits for students and institutions, it also presents challenges that need to be carefully managed. By engaging in dialogue and collaboration, stakeholders can ensure a smooth transition and successful implementation of biannual admissions, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and dynamic higher education system in India.

Flexibility and Convenience

Let us now highlight each of the online learning benefits one by one as we go along, with the topmost being convenience and flexibility in learning.

One of the most significant advantages of online learning for working professionals is the enhanced flexibility it offers. Unlike traditional classroom settings, online courses allow individuals to access learning materials and participate in discussions at their convenience. This flexibility is particularly valuable for those with demanding work schedules or irregular hours, as they can study during evenings, weekends, or even during breaks at work.

  • Self-Paced Learning: Online courses allow working professionals to learn at their own pace, thereby accommodating their busy schedules. This advantage of learning the course in their time relieves them of the added pressure of having to study with a job alongside and does not even disturb their normal work schedule.
  • 24/7 Access to Course Materials: All course materials online are available around the clock, enabling learners to study whenever they have some free time in hand. This also saves them the time and unnecessary effort of having to access a physical library or school for learning, which can particularly be a challenge with a job. Students can access all their course material at the tap of a button from any portable device (mobile/laptop).

Balancing Work, Education, and Personal Life

One of the many advantages of online learning for working professionals is the ability to achieve a work-life balance along with continuing education. Here’s how distance learning helps working professionals:

  • Time Management: Professionals are better able to manage their time and divide it proportionately between work, education, and personal responsibilities. Self-paced learning facilitates flexible study hours, 24/7 access to online course materials, and even evening/weekend classes.
  • Reduced Commute: Online learning has helped eliminate commuting time, providing more time for learning and personal activities to students. More personal time allows them more scope to spend time with family and friends, or for self-care.

Online learning often proves to be more cost-effective for working professionals compared to traditional education. Many online courses are priced competitively or even lower than their on-campus counterparts, primarily due to reduced overhead costs associated with physical facilities and infrastructure. Additionally, online learners save on commuting expenses, campus accommodation, and other incidental costs associated with attending a brick-and-mortar institution. Online learning programs are generally more cost-effective than conventional on-campus degrees:

  • Lower Tuition Fees: Since distance learning eliminates the need for physical classrooms and commutation to and fro the classes, the fee of the course is relatively much lower than that of attending a degree program on campus.
  • Savings on Commuting and Accommodation: Lower course fees thereby facilitating cost savings on commuting, accommodation, and other expenses associated with attending classes in person.

Benefits of pursuing an AICTE-approved program

When choosing a professional course to pursue for career advancement and growth, it is important to evaluate all your options well. Doing your homework well and researching all available options is one of the best ways before making your choice. Courses approved by the AICTE are one of the most preferred options by most students in India. We will look more into the advantages of the AICTE-approved course in this blog and why you should consider opting for one while charting your career path.

What is AICTE?

Let us begin by understanding what AICTE implies and the value it holds in the domain of education and learning.

AICTE is the popular All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) acronym. It is a statutory organization at the national level that serves as a council for technical education in India. The organization falls under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, India, and has been in existence since 1945.

The body is responsible for effectively planning and coordinating the development of the technical and management education system in India. Let us learn a little more about AICTE in the subsequent sections.

How does a university become AICTE-approved?

One of the primary roles that this statutory body plays in India is sanctioning educational institutions in the country based on certain specific parameters. AICTE approval’s importance lies in the fact that it helps increase the value of the institution and inevitably increases its demand among the students. Listed below is exactly how a university can gain AICTE approval in India:

Step 1: Eligibility compliance

To be considered for AICTE approval, the educational institution must first be able to meet the basic eligibility criteria set by the body. Some of the standard requirements include compliance with building infrastructure, land requirements, qualified faculty, and financial stability of the university.

Step 2: Applying with AICTE

Once the institution meets the pre-defined AICTE approval criteria, it is qualified to apply to the official website of AICTE. The application contains some vital information about the institution, including details of the faculty, infrastructure, courses offered, and compliance with AICTE norms.

Step 3: Submission of required documents

The next step in the process is to submit a set of defined documents to the AICTE. The university is required to submit proof of approval of the building plan, qualification certificates of the faculty, land ownership papers, and other financial statements, as required.

Step 4: Application review

Upon receipt of documents from the university, the AICTE initiates a thorough scrutiny of the submitted application and all the documents to ensure that they comply with the required criteria.

Step 5: University inspection

An Expert Visit Committee (EVC) appointed by the AICTE carries out a thorough inspection of the university site, including areas like laboratories, classrooms, libraries, and the overall infrastructure, faculty, and other resources at the institution.

Step 6: Submission of compliance report

After the inspection, the university may need to work on some shortcomings as highlighted by the EVC in its report. After addressing those discrepancies, the university is required to submit a compliance report with complete details on how those shortcomings have been addressed.

Step 7: Approval

Upon receiving the compliance report, AICTE then decides whether or not to approve the university. If the university is AICTE-approved, it receives a formal approval letter with details of the number of seats and courses approved by the body.

Step 8: Submission of annual compliance report

The approved university is required to submit an annual compliance report to the AICTE displaying regular compliance with its norms and regulatory guidelines.

Why is AICTE accreditation important?

We learned in the section above about AICTE accreditation and the steps involved for a university to receive this approval.  But, why exactly is this approval important in the first place? Let us look at some of the key AICTE certification advantages:

  • Benefits to the students: Students completing courses from AICTE-approved universities and educational institutions are more likely to gain recognition by employers and other higher education institutions. This is because AICTE accreditation is a validation of the quality of learning received by graduates.
  • Assurance of quality: AICTE accreditation is also an assurance of the quality of learning offered by a university. The quality standards also hold for the faculty, infrastructure, and overall educational delivery, in addition to the curriculum.
  • Regular compliance: AICTE accreditation requires universities and educational institutions to comply with certain regulatory standards at the national level. This facilitates uniformity across different technical educational institutes in India.
  • Imparts credibility: A university approved by AICTE gains credibility and recognition both at the national and international levels. This serves as a hallmark of quality for the courses imparted by the university, not just for the students, but also for the parents and employers.
  • Facilitates eligibility for scholarships: Universities aspiring to receive funds, grants, and scholarships are required to be AICTE-approved. The financial support received can be used for infrastructure, faculty, and curriculum enhancement.

Importance of an AICTE-approved MCA program

We learned in the above section the various AICTE course benefits. These benefits extend to various study programs in different domains. However, the significance and relevance of technical accreditation are felt the most in the case of an MCA program at a university.

Master of Computer Applications or MCA programs require AICTE accreditation which can be particularly helpful in increasing the hiring ability of graduates and improving the overall credibility of the university imparting the course.

In addition, the AICTE Act of 1987 makes it mandatory for any university offering technical programs, such as the likes of MCA, to apply for and receive AICTE accreditation before imparting the two-year MCA course to students on or off campus. This implies that online MCA courses also require AICTE approval before being delivered to the students.

Sikkim Manipal University’s MCA degree is AICTE-approved

Benefits of pursuing an MCA with SMU

We also learned why an AICTE accreditation for a technical program like MCA is even more important and that Sikkim Manipal University allows you the exclusive chance of gaining an MCA degree that is accredited by the statutory body.

MCA courses in the country are generally mandated to be approved by the statutory body before being imparted in universities. Keeping in line with this mandate, Sikkim Manipal University, or SMU offers its online MCA programs that are accredited by the AICTE. The program is hence recognized across India and enhances the employability of graduates around the world.
