Lalita Thambi is an ex-army person who has served in the Indian Military Nursing Services (MNS), a part of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) of the Indian army. MNS officers are an integral part of the country’s war efforts, humanitarian assistance, rescue operations, hospital ships and submarines, and serve the Indian troops from the highest battlefield to the vast desert lands of India. Lt. Thambi shifted to the private sector about three decades ago and is now working for Fortis Healthcare. She is pursuing a BBA from Online Manipal, with the hopes of completing an online MBA as well. We approached Lt. Thambi for an interview, and she agreed to share her experience in the army and as a civilian with us. Why did you decide to join the army? I was fascinated by the dedication of soldiers at the border and wanted to learn and experience their tough life routine. Also, the uniform itself was quite attractive with stars on the shoulders! At the time of my admission into military nursing, there was only one gateway for women to enter the Indian Army and that was via the Army Medical Corps. I was in my final year pursuing B.Com (Hons.) at Delhi University when the Indian Army opened the intake for non-science students. I was fortunate to get into AMC despite being a commerce student. Indeed, the process for the same was quite robust! Describe your military experience Since I was part of the MNS, I was part of the rescue team of 181 MH, responsible for handling emergencies like accidental fall of vehicles and buses into the deep valley. I also trained in rifle drills and weapon safety since all MNS personnel are expected to serve in field areas. I also took part in inter-unit badminton matches both doubles and singles and was a champion! What were the life-altering lessons you learnt during your service? Customs and courtesies are ingrained at every level in our military. Respect for chain of command, for each other, for civilians, and even for enemies is always first and foremost. This applies while working, training, and even during your personal time. We learn to be good at a handful of things through specialization and that sets us apart. Last, but not least, by learning to obey, I learnt how to command. During my service, I learnt values like discipline, bravery, selflessness, and adaptability. We were all taught how to make winning a habit and to never shy away from hard work. Military life and service requires a sharp eye and attention to detail, which helps me in everyday life. I was able to develop leadership and ownership skills during my service. Military rejuvenates your sense of optimism and passion to achieve lifelong goals. It is undeniable that military service changes you for the good and makes you want to be the person your society, colleagues, friends, and family members can be proud of. How does it feel transitioning back to civilian life? The decision to separate from the military and transition into the civilian workforce carries many challenges. Both work-role and personal identity transitions occur when one leaves the military. There are the practical considerations, such as where to live and what sort of education or work to pursue. But there are also emotional challenges for service members and their families. Whether it’s a short stint in the military or a long career, it can be a tough change in the first few months – and even years – after finishing your service. How did the shift to the private sector happen? It was not a choice but an opportunity that fell into my lap. I was approached by an Australian laboratory that wanted to launch in the Indian market with 32 branches across the National Capital Region. They were looking for a supervisor with a military background to train their nurses and phlebotomists. I was offered this opportunity and successfully launched my career as a Staff Development and Education Officer. I have been working in the private sector, corporate offices, international and national NGOs for almost 30 years. I always wanted to pursue an MBA in HRM but somehow my hectic work-life schedule after the army didn’t allow me any ‘me time’. Now that I have that in hand, I’m doing what I always wanted to and will look for a different line of work to start as a challenge. What does your future look like? I have keen interest in starting a small-scale business of my own and a human resource management organization which has both training and development streams. My total work experience has helped me acquire the skills required for both. What are the evergreen lessons you learned during your service in the armed forces? The life of every soldier is filled with difficulties and hardships. We have overcome extremely difficult situations that I haven’t shared with anyone, including my family and friends. The Indian Army has given me so much that I can never return this favor to them. One of the biggest lessons I learnt during my 18 years of service in the Army is- never say no to new opportunities. When we are assigned a task, there is no option of saying no. Once the Lakshman Rekha is drawn, there is no looking back. I feel this rule not only applies to our professional life, but also in our personal life. Most importantly, the Army has taught me to lead a disciplined life. We often get to deal with challenging situations but over time, we have learnt to overcome them. The Indian Army training also teaches us to strategically overcome difficult situations. In the Army, there is no bias. We live in peace and harmony with our fellow soldiers, irrespective of their caste, religion or where they come from. One thing that surprises me the most is we don’t envy each other’s achievements. We work as a team and ensure our duties are carried out. Describe the best/most unforgettable memory during your service The encounter of Burhan Wani, commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, in South Kashmir was one of the most unforgettable incidents during my service. The encounter triggered a massive agitation in Kashmir, and we had to face a never-seen-before situation. Peace in Kashmir was disturbed and Indian Army soldiers went through a tough phase. Another unfortunate incident I would like to recall is the 2014 Srinagar floods. It was one of the most devastating days for Kashmiris. Several casualties were reported, and the Army was deployed to safeguard civilians. We struggled to provide food, water, shelter and medicines for the victims. However, the Army tried their best to bring the situation back to normal. When did you decide to pursue an online degree? The Indian Army has given several opportunities to ensure higher education to every soldier. I completed my BBA through distance education and was willing to pursue my masters as well. We can expect these higher education trends in 2023 On the eve of the new year 2023, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India, Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar, gave an interview with the Indian news agency IANS, in which he discussed various trends and changes that are expected to happen in the higher education sector in India in 2023. Major steps to be implemented in 2023 UGC chairman has listed some rules and steps that the apex higher education regulatory body is planning to implement this year. UGC will facilitate Indian higher education institutions (HEIs) to strengthen their international presence. UGC is all set to establish a National Digital University that will offer a wide range of qualifications and bring together various universities with no upper limit on the number of seats so that students who have completed 12th grade can access higher education. UGC will be implementing the National Higher Education Qualification Framework, which will make it easier to integrate vocational education into higher education. UGC will be launching a National Credit Framework, which will integrate credits from school, higher education, and vocational education, as well as experiential learning. The universities will also offer the option of multiple entry and exit, through the Academic Bank of Credits. UGC is encouraging universities to incorporate Indian Knowledge System into higher education. Acceptance to FYUP Several universities are working on introducing a Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUP) that allows the institutions to create their own implementation mechanisms through academic and executive councils to better facilitate students in pursuing their research interests, promoting creativity, and fostering entrepreneurial and innovative skills, ultimately leading to better employability. The FYUP is designed to implement a holistic and multidisciplinary educational approach, providing students the flexibility to focus on their chosen major and minor areas of interest, as per their preferences. With the introduction of the ‘Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programme’ by the University Grants Commission (UGC), universities now have the option of providing an FYUP, allowing students to study one or more specialized areas of interest in-depth. Collaboration with foreign universities The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) plans to bring in some of the world’s top universities to operate in India, by providing the necessary provisions for setting up and operating campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions (FHEIs) in the country. This move aims to provide an international dimension to higher education in India while allowing Indian students to obtain foreign qualifications at a more affordable cost and make India a more attractive study destination for students from around the globe. It is reported that several universities from countries such as the USA, UK, France, Australia, and Italy have shown their interest in this opportunity, and it is expected that once the regulatory provision is announced, more well-performing foreign universities will come forward to apply. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also reached out to Ambassadors and Heads of Missions from 66 different countries whose universities are eligible for collaboration. These countries include the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Singapore, Israel, New Zealand, Norway, and Malaysia among others. Meetings were organized with select US universities with the support of the Indian Mission and German universities in collaboration with DAAD. At present, 49 foreign HEIs are collaborating with Indian HEIs. Indian students will be able to earn internationally relevant education in India through twinning, joint, or dual degree programs with academic collaborations between Indian and foreign HEIs.
