Anyone weighing up Chartered Accountancy (CA) as a career route in India tends to ask the same first question: what does it actually pay? The honest answer is that CA salary in India is not one number but a range that shifts with experience, employer, specialization, and city. The pattern across that range, however, is fairly consistent and unusually well documented, thanks largely to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), which runs official campus placement drives and discloses verified placement data three times a year.

That data matters because it separates fact from social media noise. In the 64th ICAI Campus Placement Program (April–May 2026), 8,911 vacancies were offered against 5,834 participating candidates which is a ratio of roughly 1.5 jobs for every qualified CA. ICAI’s own Secretary publicly confirmed an average starting package of ₹12–13 LPA for this drive, directly countering claims that had circulated online of fresher salaries as low as ₹3–5 LPA. That level of demand is exactly why CA pay in India has held up well even as competition for finance talent has intensified across sectors.

What is a Chartered Accountant (CA)?

A Chartered Accountant is a professional certified by ICAI to practice in accounting, auditing, taxation, and financial advisory in India. It is one of the most respected finance qualifications in the country and, alongside ACCA and CPA, forms one of the primary routes into audit, taxation, financial reporting, and corporate finance careers.

The path to becoming a CA runs through three stages such as CA Foundation, CA Intermediate, and CA Final. This is alongside accompanied with a mandatory three-year articleship (practical training) under a practicing CA. This structure is one reason CA salaries tend to rise in a fairly predictable way: by the time a candidate qualifies, they already carry two to three years of hands-on audit, tax, or accounting exposure, which employers factor into the starting offer.

CA Salary for Freshers in India

The CA salary for freshers in India depends on articleship quality, rank, the recruiting firm, and location. Based on the most recent ICAI Campus Placement Program disclosures, the average starting package for a newly qualified CA sits at ₹12–13 LPA, with the highest domestic offer reaching ₹32.33 LPA in the 63rd placement drive and international offers crossing ₹50 LPA in the 64th.

CA Fresher Salary Profile Indicative Annual Salary
Average CA fresher (industry-wide) ₹7 LPA – ₹9 LPA
Big 4 firms ₹9 LPA – ₹14 LPA
Mid-size and small firms ₹6 LPA – ₹9 LPA
Top rank holders / strong articleship exposure ₹12 LPA – ₹18 LPA
Multiple attempts / limited articleship exposure ₹5 LPA – ₹8 LPA

For CAs who enter the profession through routes other than ICAI campus placements, such as direct hiring by mid-sized or small firms, starting salaries tend to be more modest, typically ranging from ₹6–10 LPA. As professionals gain experience and move into roles such as senior auditor, tax consultant, financial analyst, or finance manager, their earning potential increases substantially.

CA Salary in India by Experience

Experience is one of the strongest predictors of CA salary in India, though there is no single fixed number. The pay at each stage depends on employer, specialization, and location as much as years worked.

Experience Level Indicative Annual Salary Typical Roles
0–2 years ₹9 LPA – ₹13 LPA (up to ₹18 LPA in niche advisory) Junior Auditor, Tax Associate, Financial Analyst
3–6 years ₹18 LPA – ₹40 LPA Senior Associate, Assistant Manager – Audit/Tax
7–10 years ₹35 LPA – ₹50 LPA Manager/Senior Manager, Financial Controller
10–15 years ₹40 LPA – ₹70 LPA Associate Director, Practice Owner
15+ years ₹70 LPA – ₹1 Cr and above Partner, CFO, Finance Director

The higher experience-level ranges are indicative of market estimates rather than fixed CA-specific benchmarks, since salary platforms often report compensation by job title rather than by qualification alone.

CA Salary by Job Role in India

CA salary in India can vary significantly by job role. Chartered Accountants move into accounting, audit, taxation, financial analysis, and finance leadership positions, and pay differs based on the responsibility and specialization of each role demands.

Job Role Indicative Annual Salary
Article Assistant / Trainee (stipend) ₹1.5 LPA – ₹4.2 LPA
Account Executive ₹1.2 LPA – ₹20.4 LPA
Finance Officer ₹1.7 LPA – ₹12 LPA
Assistant Account Manager ₹3 LPA – ₹11 LPA
Tax Consultant ₹1.5 LPA – ₹11 LPA
Financial Analyst ₹3.3 LPA – ₹23 LPA
Finance Controller ₹6.1 LPA – ₹60 LPA

These are broad role-based salary ranges rather than salaries earned exclusively by CA-qualified professionals, since public salary platforms typically classify pay by job title rather than by qualification.

CA Salary by Industry in India

Industry is another factor that shapes CA salary in India. Chartered Accountants find opportunities across audit firms, banking and financial services, consulting, PSUs, and manufacturing, with compensation varying by organizational complexity and demand for specialized finance skills.

Industry / Employer Type Indicative Fresher Salary Indicative Mid-Level Salary
Big 4 firms ₹9 LPA – ₹14 LPA ₹16 LPA – ₹35 LPA
Banking & financial services ₹11 LPA – ₹20 LPA ₹20 LPA – ₹40 LPA
IT, consulting & GCCs ₹9 LPA – ₹15 LPA ₹20 LPA – ₹38 LPA
FMCG & manufacturing ₹8 LPA – ₹13 LPA ₹18 LPA – ₹32 LPA
PSUs & government bodies ₹8 LPA – ₹18 LPA (up to ₹34 LPA at RBI/SEBI grade) Slower growth; strong non-cash benefits
PE-backed startups ₹10 LPA – ₹16 LPA ₹20 LPA – ₹25 LPA

The salary ranges above are indicative market benchmarks and should not be read as fixed CA-specific pay scales.

CA Salary in Big Four Companies

Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG remain among the largest employers of newly qualified CAs in India, offering roles across statutory audit, tax, assurance, advisory, risk, and deals.

Recent placement and salary data suggest CA freshers at Big 4 firms typically start around ₹9–14 LPA, while professionals in managerial roles with four to six years of experience move into the ₹22–35 LPA range. Mid-to-senior Big 4 employees report an average of roughly ₹22.3 lakh, mostly ranging between ₹16 lakh and ₹34.6 lakh.

Career Stage Indicative Salary Range
CA fresher / entry-level ₹9 LPA – ₹14 LPA
Mid-level (3–6 years) ₹16 LPA – ₹30 LPA
Managerial roles ₹22 LPA – ₹35 LPA

Big 4 exposure builds credibility fast and offers structured learning across large clients, but it typically comes with longer hours. Industry roles usually offer better work-life balance, sometimes at the cost of a slightly slower pay ceiling.

Factors Affecting CA Salary in India

CA salary in India is not determined by the qualification alone. Several factors influence how much a professional earns and how quickly that pay grows.

Experience

Practical exposure has a significant impact on earning potential. CAs typically move from entry-level audit or tax roles into more specialized, senior positions as they build a track record.

Specialization

Generalist roles in statutory audit and compliance tend to sit at the lower end of the pay band. Niche specializations such as transfer pricing, financial due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, and forensic audit command noticeably higher pay.

Industry and Employer

Compensation differs between accounting firms, MNCs, banks, consulting firms, PSUs, and startups. The size and reputation of the employer also plays a role.

Location

Professionals working in major financial hubs typically have access to a wider range of high-paying roles, though this is partly offset by a higher cost of living in those cities.

Number of Attempts

First-attempt passouts and rank holders often receive stronger starting offers, particularly through ICAI’s campus placement channel. This effect tends to fade within two to three years, once performance and specialization become the primary drivers of pay.

Why Mumbai Pays a Premium

City matters more than most people expect. Mumbai, as India’s financial capital, tends to offer stronger CA compensation than most other Indian cities, largely because of its concentration of Big 4 offices, BFSI headquarters, and bulge-bracket investment banks.

Entry-level CA roles in Mumbai often start meaningfully above the national fresher benchmark of ₹9–13 LPA, commonly landing in the ₹10–18 LPA range, and the gap widens further up the ladder — mid-level professionals with around five years of experience typically earn ₹25–45 LPA in the city. Bengaluru runs a close second, driven by its concentration of GCCs and tech-finance roles, followed by Delhi NCR.

CA Versus ACCA: A Quick Word on Pay

This comparison comes up often enough to address directly. In the early years, Indian CAs often out-earn ACCA professionals in purely domestic roles, since CA remains the qualification legally required for statutory audit and tax representation work under Indian law.

ACCA, by contrast, tends to be more relevant for professionals pursuing international finance and reporting roles, particularly at MNCs and GCCs, where its IFRS-based curriculum is a closer fit. Career opportunities and pay for either qualification ultimately depend on the specific role, employer, and practical experience gained — not the qualification alone.

The Takeaway

If you’re wondering whether CA is worth pursuing for its earning potential, the numbers are encouraging. Freshers can expect ₹9–13 LPA through ICAI’s official placement channel, mid-level professionals typically earn ₹20–40 LPA, and senior professionals in Big 4 or MNC leadership roles can cross ₹50 LPA well before the ten-year mark. Salaries tend to be highest in Mumbai and Bengaluru, and with Big 4 or top consulting employers. Ultimately, though, your salary depends less on the qualification itself and more on the specialization, employer, and city you choose after clearing CA Final.
