According to a LinkedIn report, a UNESCO study shows student engagement in online learning drops by 38% after the first month.

The above statistic is an issue that needs to be addressed. To stay motivated in a classroom itself is a challenge and now imagine staying consistent when nobody is there to monitor you, remind you about deadlines, or push you to keep going. Suddenly, procrastination feels easier, distractions grow louder, and giving up starts to seem tempting.

This is exactly where grit makes all the difference.

Grit is the ability to stay committed to a goal at all times and even when things become very difficult to handle, or repetitive, or exhausting. It is not just about being talented or intelligent but it’s about showing up during the hardest days, when you feel unmotivated,

In online learning, where self-discipline matters more than ever, grit often becomes the hidden factor that separates learners who quit halfway from those who actually complete their journey and achieve their goals.

What is Grit?

‘Grit’ is a term that is coined by Angela Duckworth, the psychologist and researcher. In Duckworth’s words, grit is very important in all aspects of life. According to Wikipedia, “Grit is a positive, non-cognitive trait based on a person’s perseverance of effort combined with their passion for a particular long-term goal or end state (a powerful motivation to achieve an objective). This perseverance of effort helps people overcome obstacles or challenges to accomplishment and drives people to achieve.”

Are you naturally smart and intelligent? Great! But it is grit that determines whether that advantage is ever used. Talent without grit stays dormant. It is only through sustained effort that talent becomes skill, and skill becomes success.

Role of ‘Grit’ in Online Learning

In traditional forms of learning, where students sit alongside their peers, attend classes in physical classrooms, and can walk up to a professor with a question, staying focused comes somewhat naturally. The structure is already built in. But in an online setup, that structure disappears. Distractions are constant, that is you can get notifications in between, a buzzing phone there. Moreover, the screen fatigue sets in faster than most students expect.

Even the ones who started out highly motivated can find that drive slowly fading as the weeks go on.
This is exactly where grit comes into play. Before one decides to join online education, understand that it’s not going to be easy for you to be consistently motivated. But a learner who has developed grit does not bail when things get hard or boring.
Grit is different from motivation; Motivation tends to come and go depending on mood or circumstance whereas grit is steadier.

It is what keeps a student logging back in after a rough week, finishing an assignment even when no one is watching, and continuing to move forward even when progress feels invisible.

In an online learning environment especially, where there is no teacher physically present to nudge you along and no classmate sitting next to you to keep you accountable, grit becomes less of a bonus trait and more of a necessity.

Grit vs Motivation: What’s the Difference?

As discussed above, both are different. Motivation is temporary whereas grit is a long-term perseverance. Let us see the differences in detail below:

So, as in the image, motivation can depend on a lot of factors that might or might not be under our control. For example, the environment, energy levels, or external rewards. For example, a student may feel highly motivated after watching an inspiring video or setting a new goal. However, that excitement may fade within days when coursework becomes difficult or repetitive, or when there is no result.

Grit, on the other hand, is about long-term perseverance. It helps learners continue even when motivation disappears.

A motivated student may study intensely for a few days. A gritty student studies consistently for months, even on difficult days.

This distinction becomes very important in online learning because digital education requires a high level of independent effort. One needs to be committed over time with high-levels of discipline, and patience.

How to Build Grit as an Online Learner

The good news is that grit is not a fixed personality trait. It can be developed gradually through habits, mindset shifts, and consistent practice.

Start with Small, Attainable goals.

In the beginning, a student needs to break down larger tasks into smaller goals, so they are not overwhelmed. The process of working through small goals builds confidence and momentum.

Prioritize Consistency

The most significant thing to keep in mind is that perfection isn’t everything! You don’t need to be a perfect learner, but what matters most is to continue a regular effort over time.

Create a Study Routine

Having a dedicated study schedule reduces dependence on mood or motivation. Routines make learning feel more manageable and sustainable.

Learn to Accept Setbacks

Grit is about not giving up, which being said every learner should learn to treat failure as not the end, but as feedback and continue improving.

Track Your Progress (And be proud of it!)

Completed lessons, assignments, or hours of study can help learners stay motivated and recognize how far they have come. It’s not about being on top of the class or getting the best grades. It’s about consistent efforts to improve from previous milestone you achieved, which will bring you success.

Remember Why You’re Doing It

Connecting learning with relevant personal or professional aims tends to help learners persevere through tough times.
