In the past, we were excited to learn and so much was done to motivate us to be curious. Now, even the thought of learning leaves us exhausted. Learning has become a chore rather than something we look forward to. Our learning has become difficult due to distractions from deadlines, constant notifications, and the pressure to stand out in a competitive market.

Today’s hustle culture tells us that resting is a luxury and that slowing down is considered weak. In becoming part of the hustle culture, we have neglected to ask ourselves an important question about the value of learning: “Can learning really come at the cost of my well-being?”  “How much can we achieve through hustling if we create negative consequences for ourselves?” Is the fear of failing to ‘hustle’ bad and prevent many from experiencing their own success and happiness?

Let’s take a closer look at how thinking around these concepts is shifting today.

The Rise of Hustle Culture and Burnout Among Learners

In the Asian Journal of Probability and Statistics, it says “Out of 291 students, 139 (47.8%) were classified as experiencing stress and burnout”.

This statistic raises an important question: why is hustle culture being glorified so heavily among learners today? In the current scenario, being constantly busy is often seen as a ‘badge of honor!’ Students proudly travel long distances to reach their dream colleges, sacrifice sleep, and push themselves endlessly because “hustling” is considered normal.

The relentless expectation to achieve greater results, prove one’s commitment to the organization, etc., has caused many people to reach a stage of “burnout.” Being tired is now expected; the chance of finding an educational institute or workplace that does not view stress as a badge of honor is diminishing each day.

Another concerning reality is how burnout, once regarded as a very serious warning sign, is now frequently viewed as the beginning of a positive, healthy, fruitful phase toward greatness. Therefore, we need to ask ourselves if these educational institutions that demand this level of persistent performance are healthy for the general population. Further, they are creating a cycle where learning is exhausting rather than empowering, and individuals continue to grow at the expense of their mental health.

Example of Hustle Culture and Burnout Among Learners

We see many of them say, it’s okay if you are feeling stressed, or overwhelmed; it’s just a pathway to success! A common idea of hustle culture among learners today is that struggle equals success. Over time, this mindset takes a serious toll. Students begin to lose interest in learning, not because the subject is difficult, but because they are physically and mentally drained.

Consider a student who has to fight through long commutes each time to attend college while working a part-time job to be able to afford his/ her college experience. After a day of long commutes, classes, homework, and job shifts, it is difficult for students to fully engage in their learning process. Because of this constant “running,” students gradually lose their ability to remain focused and eventually reach the point of mental fatigue from too much work.

What Are the Consequences of Hustle Culture?

Though there are many consequences, let us discuss the most severe ones:

Burnout and Chronic Exhaustion
Due to an excessive pressure placed on students to always perform at their best, with no downtime from classes and activities, many students eventually become burned out and chronically exhausted.

Decline in Focus and Learning Quality
While the routine of throwing oneself into hustling may provide short-term success, over time, it leads to diminished ability to focus and a lack of depth in learning.

Loss of Motivation and Passion
With the pressing demands of school, many students lose their excitement and interest in their studies, as well as the inspiration to pursue their areas of interest.

Mental Health Challenges
Hustle culture causes persistent stress, anxiety, and self-comparison, when rest is seen as weakness instead of a necessity.

How to Rethink Learning in the Times of Hustle Culture

In today’s society, people believe being busy is a sign of success, yet the learning process itself should never add to a person’s degree of exhaustion or fatigue. In a time when hustle culture encourages individuals to pursue maximum productivity while sacrificing their health and well-being, it is essential for learning to become more flexible.

To be a real support to an individual’s ongoing success and development, online learning is a valuable resource to provide this support to those who choose to pursue it.

Benefits of Online Learning for Students

  • Online learning gives students an opportunity to gain knowledge at their own pace, reducing the stress of keeping up with other students.
  • The ability to access recorded classes allows students to repeat material that they may have misunderstood, rather than stressing about completing the material too quickly.
  • Students also experience less stressful commuting and rigid scheduling because of the flexible nature of online classes. The ability to balance education with work, family, and mental health needs is another positive aspect of online learning.
  • Through live sessions and peer interaction, online learners can continue to have social and interactive experiences while learning.
  • When managed properly, this type of learning can lead to successful, long-term growth and development without experiencing any form of burnout.

Conclusion

Many students think that success comes from working hard without regard to the cost to their health or well-being. However, as time goes on, it becomes increasingly clear that success does not come solely from working hard. It requires both smart work and hard work to achieve goals successfully. Sacrificing your mental and physical health in search of achieving a particular objective does not justify the ends.

When it comes to learning, flexibility makes all the difference. Online education offers flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace while balancing life, health, and ambition. The most important thing to note is that the quality and reputation of online courses are very much comparable to those of traditional classroom-based programs.

Of course, sky is the limit. Just remember that reaching it doesn’t have to wear you out!
