Dr. Rinzing Ongmu Sherpa Assistant Professor M.Phil., PhD, UGC-NET & JRF

Dr. Rinzing Ongmu Sherpa is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at CDOE, Sikkim Manipal University. She received her PhD degree in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 2023. She was awarded the UGC-NET&JRF scholarship, in Sociology. Her areas of interest include ethnicity and identity politics, community studies, gender studies, Himalayan studies, and ethnography. Over the years, she has been a part of several national and international academic conferences, seminars, talks, and workshops. In 2019, her M.Phil. research paper was funded by the Ireland India Institute, Dublin City University for their Annual International Conference on South Asia. Additionally, she has presented her works at the University of Toronto, Social Science Baha, Kathmandu, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Ambedkar University Delhi, among others. Further, she has published in academic journals and edited volumes while also contributing regularly to online articles and op-eds for local newspapers. Ms. Rinzing has seven years of research experience and specializes in ethnographic research. Her teaching philosophy is anchored in the creation of an inclusive and safe learning space for her students. She is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary learning experiences, aiming for a nuanced understanding of complex social phenomena beyond traditional classroom boundaries.

Ms. Ambika Rai Assistant Professor MA, M.Phil., UGC-NET

Ms. Ambika Rai is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Centre for Distance and Online Education, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, Majitar, Rangpo, East Sikkim. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the Centre for Himalayan Studies (CHS), University of North Bengal (NBU). Ms. Rai completed her M.Phil. from CHS, NBU, in 2017, and her postgraduate degree in Sociology from the Department of Sociology, NBU, in 2015. She qualified for the UGC-NET in Sociology in 2017 and was awarded the Junior as well as Senior Research Fellowship by the University of North Bengal (State Fellowship).

Mrinalini Subba is currently working as an assistant professor of sociology at Sikkim Manipal University. She is pursuing her PhD at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. All applications will be evaluated for eligibility by the admissions team of Sikkim Manipal University. In case the university requires further clarification or documents, the candidate will be intimated via email, SMS or phone. Final decision regarding selection will be notified to the candidate within five working days of submitting the application.

Once a decision has been taken on the application submitted, the status of admission would be intimated to the candidate via email and SMS. 

How are Sikkim Manipal University’s online degree programs delivered? 

Sikkim Manipal University’s online programs are delivered in a 100% online mode so that students can attend live classes and complete the program remotely, while also pursuing their professional and personal commitments in parallel. 

Will the program have live lectures and webinars? 

Yes. The program is delivered through a mix of live lectures, pre- recorded videos and discussion forums in which students can interact directly with faculty and self-paced learning. Self-paced learning is driven by video lectures, e-books, quizzes, and assignments that are delivered using a state-of-the-art Learning Management System (LMS).

Are there any mandatory sessions? 

Students are expected to attend live classes, watch recorded sessions, and go through at least 75% of the self-learning content (reading material and video lectures) available on LMS. This would ensure they are eligible to appear for the final exams. 

When will I get access to the learning modules? 

After admission is confirmed by the university, students will receive access to the Learning Management System (LMS), student portal and e-library. Students can then start accessing the course material and begin their learning journey.

How much time should I dedicate to complete the learning activities? 

Although the learning is flexible, students are expected to spend at least 15-20 hours per week watching concept videos, reading learning material, attempting quizzes, and attending live webinars. This would ensure that you get your degree within the minimum duration. 

How can I get my academic queries answered? 

Students will be assigned dedicated course mentors and coordinators who can be contacted to clarify doubts using discussion forums, instant messaging, and email on the Learning Management System (LMS). 

What is the examination pattern for online degrees at Sikkim Manipal University? 

  • The University term-end examination (TEE) will be held digitally viz. computer-based and online proctored.
  • Candidates can appear for the exams from the comfort of their homes.
  • The details of the examination schedule will be made available in the photo admit card. Other details on the examination pattern are available in the program guide provided to students.
  • Examination results will be published on the student portal. If a student fails to clear any of the papers (either in UE or IA or both), he must re-appear by applying to the University through the re-sitting application along with relevant fees, within the due date.
  • On satisfying all criteria stipulated by the University, successful students will be awarded their respective program degree by the University.

What is the evaluation & assessment pattern? 

  • A student’s performance evaluation will be based on both continuous assessments (CA) through assignments and term-end examinations (TEE) which consist of descriptive and multiple-choice questions. A student must score at least 40% in each of these to be declared as having passed the exam. The assessment ratio of TEE to CA is 70:30.
  • A student must score at least 40% in both the parts to be declared as having passed.

What is the minimum grade to complete the online degree program? 

Students must score at least 40% in continuous evaluation and 40% in term-end examinations in each course to successfully complete the program. In case the minimum score is not attained, they will need to apply for re-sit with applicable fees and appear for exam to pass the course. 

What is an online Master of Arts in Sociology? 

An online Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology is a postgraduate degree program that is completely delivered in online mode. It provides students with advanced knowledge of sociological concepts like human social behavior, relationships, and societal structures through online coursework, allowing for flexible study from anywhere with internet access.

Online Master of Arts in Sociology is a two-year postgraduate program. It is divided into four semesters. The maximum duration for completion of the program is 4 years.
